22.16. Brake shoes of the parking brake

Removal

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. The parking brake works irrespective of hydraulic brake system. Brake shoes of drum-type type are thus used, and as a brake drum the internal part of a brake disk is used.
2. Remove a back brake disk and note an arrangement of all details of the brake mechanism (see fig. An arrangement of details of the brake mechanism of the parking brake on the left side of the car).
3. Using flat-nose pliers, remove a plate of a spring of fixing of a brake shoe, pressing a plate and turning it on 90 °. Remove a spring from a brake board. Access to springs carry out through openings under bolts of fastening of a wheel in a flange of a nave of a back wheel (see fig. Removal of the springs holding brake shoes).
4. Being careful, remove the bottom returnable spring of brake shoes of the parking brake. Thus note a spring arrangement as it is asymmetrical (see fig. Removal of the bottom returnable spring of brake shoes of the parking brake).
5. Remove the bottom ends of brake shoes from the sliding mechanism and, moving up, remove brake shoes in collecting (see fig. Removal of brake shoes assembled from the back brake mechanism of the parking brake).
6. Note an arrangement of brake shoes, then remove the top returnable spring and separate brake shoes from an adjusting level.
7. Check wear of brake shoes and existence on them of pollution and, if necessary, replace blocks. Also it is recommended to replace returnable springs. Mercedes-Benz does not regulate limiting wear of brake shoes of the parking brake, however brake shoes it is necessary to replace, if thickness of a frictional layer of a block less than 1,5 mm.
8. Clear and check a condition of an adjusting level and the sliding mechanism and, if necessary, replace it. Grease a carving of an adjusting level and a surface of sliding of the sliding mechanism.

Installation

Installation of the bottom returnable spring

At installation of the bottom returnable spring the end face with big capture should settle down on the top brake shoe.


PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Clear a brake board and apply a thin film high-temperature greasing on places of contact of brake shoes with a brake board. Exclude greasing hit on working surfaces of brake shoes.
2. Collect brake shoes and an adjusting level. Thus the adjusting ring should settle down from the forward party of the brake mechanism. Establish on brake shoes the top returnable spring.
3. Establish brake shoes assembled on a place and combine the bottom ends of blocks with the sliding mechanism.
4. Establish the bottom returnable spring. Thus the spring end face with big capture should be connected to the top brake shoe (see fig. Installation of the bottom returnable spring).
5. Check correctness of an arrangement of brake shoes on a brake board and fix them fixing springs.
6. Center brake shoes.
7. Establish a brake disk and adjust the parking brake.
